Gregory W. Smith, Colorado PERA’s Executive Director died Tuesday while vacationing with his family in Hawaii.
Smith, 56, led PERA for five years, but had worked in senior positions there since 2002.
“Colorado PERA and its membership have lost a true leader and dedicated servant to the public workforce,” Timothy M. O’Brien, Chairman of the PERA board, said in a written statement. “Those who knew Greg knew he loved his family, was a proud fourth-generation Coloradan, and was fully dedicated to PERA and its members.”
Greg was a strong leader of PERA and a very worthy adversary for those of us with some differing policy views. While we may not always have seen eye-to-eye, there was never a doubt as to his expertise or capabilities or dedication to the PERA membership whom he served.
We offer our most sincere condolences to his wife, Laura, his two sons, William and Austin, and the entire PERA family.
